How to insert, replace and remove images in a PDF

▶ 1. Selecting an image

To work on an image already in the document you first need to switch to the dedicated selection mode: that is what tells a click on the text apart from a click on the picture next to it.

1. Install the extension from the download page and open the PDF with Choose a PDF.
2. In the top bar switch on ▣ Select image mode.
3. Click the image: a blue frame with resize handles appears.

✥ 2. Moving and resizing

Once selected, the image behaves as it would in any page-layout program.

1. Drag the blue frame to move the image where you want it.
2. Use the bottom-right handle to resize it.
3. Hold Shift while dragging if you want to break free of the original proportions.

⇆ 3. Replacing an image

This is the most common job: updating a logo, changing a photo, correcting an out-of-date chart while keeping the layout intact.

1. Select the image you want to change.
2. Click Replace with local image.
3. Choose the new file from your computer: PNG and JPG are accepted.
4. Touch up position and size if the new file has different proportions from the previous one.

✕ 4. Removing an image

When the picture has to go altogether, a single command is enough.

1. Select the image.
2. Click Remove image: the element disappears from the page.
3. If an obvious gap is left behind, consider moving the surrounding text or putting other content in its place.

＋ 5. Inserting a new image

Adding a picture where there was none works the same way on any page of the document.

1. From the Insert bar choose Add image.
2. Select the PNG or JPG file from your device.
3. Place it on the page and adjust its size by dragging the handles.

⇲ 6. Images and file size

Images are almost always the reason a PDF becomes too heavy to send by email.

If the file has grown a lot after inserting several pictures, you have two complementary routes: shrink the images before inserting them, or compress the document at the end.

1. Replace the largest images with versions already resized for the real use of the document.
2. Alternatively, compress the finished PDF with the Web, Email or Print profiles, as explained in the guide on how to compress a PDF.
3. Remember to keep the option that preserves text, links and form fields switched on, so the document does not lose its interactivity.
