How to create a PDF from scratch or from several files
Start from a blank sheet or from a ready-made layout, add text, images and tables, reorder the pages and download the finished document — straight in the browser, with no software to install.
▶ 1. Where to start
123 PDF Editor PRO is a Chrome extension: no desktop software to install, no registration, and it works the same way on Windows, Mac and Linux. To build a new document you have three routes.
From the home screen you can open a PDF, create a new one or merge and split files.
✓Blank page — the white sheet, to build everything from scratch.
✓Professional template — a ready-made layout to customise.
✓Merging several PDFs — a single document built from files you already have.
🔒
Everything happens on your device: the document is never uploaded to any server and the editor works even without a connection.
+ 2. Creating a blank PDF
This is the starting point when you want full control over the layout: a blank page in the format you prefer, to fill in as you would a word-processor sheet.
Install the extension from the download page and click its icon in the toolbar.
On the home screen choose Create a new PDF.
Select Blank page — the option is described as blank page or professional template.
Set the page size (A4, Letter, Legal or a custom measurement).
Confirm: the document opens in the editor, ready to receive your content.
▥ 3. Starting from a professional template
If the document has a familiar shape — an invoice, a CV, a contract — it is worth starting from a template: the layout is already there and you only replace the text.
There are 16 editable templates, among them invoice, résumé, contract, quote, proposal, business report, newsletter, magazine and data table. Every element stays editable: text, colours and images are changed as in any other PDF.
From Create a new PDF choose a template instead of the blank page.
Replace the placeholder text: select the block and type your own content.
Adjust font, size and colour from the side panel, as explained in the guide on text colour and background.
Need another page in the same style? Use Add Template Page to insert one.
💡
You can mix the two routes: start from a template for the cover and add blank pages for the content, or the other way round.
✍️ 4. Adding the content
Everything you put into the document lives in the Insert bar: text boxes, images, tables and signatures.
The Insert bar adds text boxes, images, tables, template pages and signatures.
Add text — draw a box wherever you want and type; then adjust font (13 are included), size, colour and background.
Add image — insert a PNG or JPG from your computer and position it by dragging the handles.
Add table — choose rows, columns, header labels and colours, then move and resize it like an image.
Add signature — place a previously saved image signature on the page.
💡
The Text type menu (Title, H1–H4, Paragraph, Caption) applies consistent sizes to headings: useful for giving the document a tidy look without adjusting every piece of text by hand.
▦ 5. Adding and ordering pages
A new document grows one page at a time. Page management all happens in a single visual panel.
Drag the thumbnails to reorder, then apply cropping, resizing and rotation.
Open Organize pages to see all the pages as thumbnails.
Add pages with Blank page or Add Template Page.
Drag the thumbnails into the right order; use Duplicate page to repeat a layout that works.
Correct the orientation with Rotate left/right and make sizes uniform with Resize page.
Click Apply page changes to bring the new structure back into the editor.
⧈ 6. Creating a PDF by merging several files
When the new document is built from material you already have — separate chapters, attachments, scans — merging is the quickest route.
Add several PDFs, put them in the order you want and import all their pages.
From the home screen choose Merge/Split PDF, or Merge multiple PDFs from Organize pages.
Add the files to combine and order them as they should appear in the final document.
Click Import: the pages flow into a single PDF you can carry on editing.
If you need the opposite, set Split every N pages and use Split PDF.
◩ 7. Finishing touches and saving
Before calling it finished, it is worth adding the elements that make a document look professional.
Page Numbers for numbering, Header and Footer for the top and bottom bands.
Watermark if the document is a draft, Background for a colour or an image behind the content.
Click Download PDF to save the document, or Save project to pick it up later from Projects.
Projects stay saved locally in the browser: nothing is sent online.
? 8. Frequently asked questions
The questions that come up most often on this topic.
Can I create a PDF starting from a Word or Excel file?
The editor works on PDFs, so it does not import a .docx or an .xlsx directly. The practical route is to export the file to PDF from the original program (Word, Excel and Google Docs all offer “Save as PDF”) and then open it here to edit it or merge it with others.
And to create a PDF from a set of images?
Create a document with Blank page, insert the first image with Add image and size it on the page; then add a new blank page for each further image. For a few images this is quick; for dozens of scans it is better to start from a PDF already produced by the scanner.
Is the document I create a real PDF?
Yes. The downloaded file is a standard PDF: it opens with any reader, the text stays selectable and searchable, and any form fields stay interactive.
How many PDFs can I create for free?
Every tool is included in the free version, with a limit of 5 PDF downloads and 3 saved projects in total. The PRO licence is a one-time payment of $24 that removes the limits, with no subscription.
